Melbourne's GPO is one of the most popular shopping destinations in Melbourne because of the many facilities, shops, restaurants and cafes it has to offer. Here you will find a huge variety of clothing stores that both men and women can enjoy. There are stores like H&M, Acne, Fat and Gorman which satisfy the general needs as well as quite a few niche shops. Besides clothing, at Melbourne's GPO you can find accessories, jewellery, items for your home and much more. For your relaxation and shopping break there are comfortable restaurants and cafes. Melbourne's GPO is easily recognizable because of its unique architectural look as it is located in the old General Post Office of Melbourne on the popular Bourke Street. Located on the intersection between Bourke and Elizabeth Street, the GPO building was conveniently positioned in the city’s central business district and its location continues to be used as a point of reference to measure distance from the centre of Melbourne. From the mid-19th Century right up until 1992, Melbournians visited the GPO to post letters, buy stationary, check their PO boxes and pay bills, but these days the building is home to retailers and restaurants. In 1858 a design competition was held for a new General Post Office building, with the winners announced on Friday 7 May 1858. The GPO was redeveloped again, reopening on 5 April 2014 occupied almost entirely by Australia's first branch of Swedish retail giant H&M, with crowds forming hours in advance. The cafes in the former delivery lane and the arcades remained in place, and the top (second) floor is occupied by offices.
