Originally built in the 1930's as the home of Van Baalen Heilburn & Co., a firm engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of men's sportswear, swimwear, and robes, the building has since undergone a transformation. In 1972, it became the manufacturing home of the Nautica clothing line under the ownership of Pacific Coast Knitting Mills.Today, Breakwater Marketplace stands as a symbol of Rockland's heritage and entrepreneurial spirit. In April 2003, entrepreneurs Stuart and Marianne Smith of Camden completed a deal to purchase the building with plans for development that included retail space, a restaurant, and hotel space overlooking the Penobscot Bay and Rockland Harbor. The development continued under the leadership of William and Carole Gartley of Rockport and James and Amy Dorsky of Appleton, resulting in the creation of Rockland's finest retail and office space.Breakwater Marketplace offers flexible workspace options, including coworking spaces, private offices, and virtual spaces.
