Work building Het Veem offers work space to entrepreneurs who want to combine the ideal and the business. The former warehouse contains 76 business spaces that are populated by artists and small-scale businesses. The workspaces are spread over five floors and vary in size.The five floors are occupied by small-scale companies, creative entrepreneurs and artists from various disciplines.In addition to the workspaces, a theater and a café-restaurant are located on the third floor. The Het Veem work building is located on the IJ, about a mile west of Central Station. The former warehouse was built on the Oude Houthaven, which was dug in 1876, at the same time as the North Sea Canal. The port is part of four ports that were used for the storage and transshipment of wood. After timber transport shifted more and more to the road, the Houthavens were used as a waiting area for inland shipping.The original bustling port area around Het Veem is now a residential destination. In the Oude Houthaven, the inland vessels have been replaced by (sailing) houseboats, and luxury apartments have been built in the two former grain silos on the adjacent Silodam. A modern residential area has been built in the adjacent Nieuwe Houthaven with the Pontsteiger building as an eye-catcher. The Het Veem work building and the adjacent Y-Tech building are the only two warehouses in the former port area that still have a work purpose.
